Candidate Higher Degree Committee

We organise monthly Candidate Higher Degree Committee meetings with candidate representatives across all the Schools and the Medicine Faculty. These meetings provide a forum for candidates to provide feedback directly to the Faculty. They also serve as a way for the Faculty to share key aspects of their strategy to support HDR student candidature.

The Candidate Higher Degree Committee runs candidate-led initiatives addressing issues across our many Medical Schools. Representatives share the information with all HDR candidates within their school via their HDR candidate society and communication channels within their schools.

Faculty Induction

We encourage new HDR candidates to attend our HDR Induction Day, which is held twice a year in Term 1 and Term 3. The Induction is separate from the Orientation events organised by the Graduate Research School and the school inductions. HDR Induction Day allows new HDR candidates to meet various UNSW representatives who provide support services for HDR candidates during their study at UNSW Medicine. Learn more about HDR resources and support below.

More Resources

At UNSW Medicine, new HDR candidates are encouraged to participate in the HDR Peer Mentoring Program. Commencing HDR candidates receive guidance from senior HDR candidates. This program provides participants with insight on how to navigate the first year of their HDR candidature and to establish a network of peers.

The Director of Postgraduate Research in Medicine offers Town Hall sessions in each school to provide HDR candidates with information on new HDR initiatives at UNSW and in Medicine, Candidature Management and Faculty Support Services.

Undertaking a HDR degree can be stressful. Sometimes issues will arise that can't be addressed by your supervisor or Postgraduate Coordinator. UNSW Counselling and Psychological Services provide a free and confidential service to all students, including HDR candidates.

HDR Extend is a resource developed by the Research Development unit to navigate your HDR candidature at UNSW and career options upon completion of your studies.

UNSW Library Research consultations connect researchers to the information and skills required to support their research, answer specific research queries, locate relevant information tools and develop research strategies tailored to individual or group needs.

Stats Central offers free consulting services to HDR candidates. They can provide you with advice on the design of your study as well as short courses and monthly seminars.
