Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to UNSW Medicine

As one of the world’s top medical schools, UNSW Medicine brings together excellence in teaching and research that addresses the most significant health challenges we face.

At UNSW Medicine, our diverse backgrounds and connection to the local and global communities translate into world-class courses and programs recognised for their meaningful impact on patients around the world.

We are one of the only medical schools in Australia to offer undergraduate entry to the integrated Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, a globally recognised qualification that will equip you for an unrivalled career in health.

As one of the world’s top 50 universities, UNSW attracts exceptionally talented students, clinicians and researchers who come from different places, with different perspectives. Our students are committed to reimagining the future of health care, thriving in a collaborative environment that provides a foundation for the discovery of therapies, technologies and treatments to diagnose and treat disease.

We encourage students to question, to discover, to design, to grow and listen and learn from each other as we produce graduates and researchers who are among the best in the world.

In 2019, our Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine program was the most in-demand course in NSW, receiving the most unique first preferences for school leavers for the second year running.

From the epidemic of obesity to global ageing and the rise of non-communicable diseases, today’s most critical health issues create numerous and diverse possibilities to drive real change. We have a mandate to be progressive, address inherent disadvantages in the health system, improve health care in Indigenous and rural communities, harness underused technology and be a part of a global community that helps people live better – wherever they are.

The development of UNSW’s partner hospitals in the south-east and south-west of Sydney allows universities and researchers to connect with community. Our newly-developed biomedical research precinct with adjacent Randwick hospitals and relationship with affiliated Medical Research Institutes mean UNSW Medicine is uniquely placed in Australia to improve patient care.

We have almost 300 teaching and research staff and more than 3,000 academic affiliates working in hands-on learning environments in some of Australia’s finest hospitals and healthcare organisations. This means students spend time in clinical environments from their first semester.

At UNSW Medicine we commit our research resources to identified areas of excellence: cancer, neuroscience and behaviour, public health, infection and immunity and cardiovascular disease. We have eight schools in Sydney and are leaders in university rural medical education, with country campuses across NSW. We encourage commercialisation and industry connections to ensure discoveries made at UNSW translate into improved health care for the community.

Our six-year medicine program not only teaches anatomy and clinical sciences – it produces respectful and caring doctors equipped to meet the demands of the future of health care. We ensure the equity and inclusion of all students and teachers.

I encourage you to learn more about UNSW Medicine and all we have to offer. We would love to hear from you.
