Profile

Nick Shackel is Professor of Medicine at UNSW and Liverpool Hospital. The research group he leads is based at the Ingham Institute at Liverpool Hospital.

Current Position

Prof. Shackel is UNSW Academic and a Senior Clinician within the Gastroenterology Department at Liverpool Hospital. He is also a PhD Scientist and Head of the Gastroenterology and Liver Disease group at the Ingham Institute. Prof Shackels’ laboratory research uses functional genomics to better understand liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and cancer as well as using transgenic animals to model human liver disease. Clinical research undertaken by his group examines the use of probiotics to change the composition of the gut flora, treatment of muscle cramps, the use biomarker predictors of liver injury and nutritional interventions in end stage liver disease. Currently Prof. Shackel leads a group of eight researchers and in August 2016 become a Professor of Medicine at UNSW and Professor of Gastroenterology at Liverpool Hospital Sydney, which is the largest hospital in Australia.

Prof. Shackel leads a group of engaged researchers whom are enthusiastic and pursue the highest possible academic standards. Prof. Shackel encourages directed independent learning and respect in research. Prof. Shackel supervises science, medicine and allied health graduates (including dieticians and nurses). Students find working with Prof. Shackel rewarding and challenging and to date he has supervised 5 honours students (4 with University Medals), 1 Masters and 7 PhD students. 

Current Funding

Prof. Shackel has NHMRC project grant funding and is the recipient of multiple other competitive grants as well pharmaceutical industry collaborative funding.
