Richard Gray

Senior Lecturer

Dr Richard Gray is a Senior Research Fellow in the Surveillance, Evaluation and Research Program at the Kirby Institute. He has as held a position as an infectious disease modeller at the Kirby Institute since 2007.

His research focuses on mathematical epidemiology and the development and use of mathematical models to investigate and analyze the transmission and progression of infectious diseases. His research aims to understand the trajectories of epidemics and evaluate the potential impact of public health strategies to inform the development of public health policy. He has conducted numerous modelling projects related to HIV, viral hepatitis and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and has recently begun projects on the potential effects of climate change on infectious diseases  and the COVID-19 response in Australia and the Western Pacific region. Currently he is responsible for producing annual estimates of Australia’s diagnosis and care cascades for HIV, viral hepatitis, and other STIs in the reported in the HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmissible infections in Australia: Annual Surveillance Report. In the past he has completed projects for Australian departments of health, key Australian community organizations, WHO, UNAIDS, and the World Bank and his previous work has informed policy development in Australia, Papua New Guinea, South-East Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and Southern Africa.
