Since NDARC's inception, more than 70 students have successfully completed a higher degree research (HDR) program at the Centre (PhD and Masters), with a success rate of over 90 per cent.

In 2020, we’re pleased to welcome eight new PhD students, all with varying areas of interest in alcohol and other drug (AOD) research.

There are five students joining the Centre in Term 1:

Liam Acheson will be working on a pilot randomised controlled trial of lisdexamphetamine for the treatment of methamphetamine withdrawal with Professor Michael Farrell.

Marta Fredes will be working on the use of novel interactive visualisation platforms to improve services for vulnerable people in NSW, Family and Community Services (FACS) and alcohol and other drug government services with Professor Anthony Shakeshaft and Dr Sara Farnbach.

Jason Guo will be working on quantifying the risk of harms from opioids using linked data with Scientia Professor Louisa Degenhardt and Dr Natasa Gisev.

Ria Hopkins (Pictured) will be identifying and addressing issues in access to health services among people using opioids for chronic pain with Dr Natasa Gisev and Scientia Professor Louisa Degenhardt.

Jaime Mclellan will be working on recognising and responding to violence, abuse and neglect in drug and alcohol and other health services with Professor Anthony Shakeshaft.

We look forward to welcoming another three students later in the year:

Abiola Olukayode Olaleye will be starting in Term 2, working on quantifying the risk of harms from opioids using linked data with Scientia Professor Louisa Degenhardt and Dr Natasa Gisev.

Anna Spencer will begin in Term 3, working on contemporary needs of caregivers to persons with problematic substance use.

Lucy Tran, who has deferred until 2021, will be working on treatment options for mental disorders for people who use methamphetamine, and the effect that these mental disorders have on treatment outcomes for methamphetamine use with Scientia Professor Louisa Degenhardt and Associate Professor Rebecca McKetin.
