UNSW Sydney’s Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine is the most in demand course in the state for school leavers choosing their first preference for university study, according to data released today by Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

This is the second year running the course has received the most unique first preferences for students starting university.

The Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine at UNSW Sydney topped the list receiving 1297 unique first preferences. UNSW’s Double Bachelor of Commerce was eighth on the list with 656 first preferences.

“We are extremely proud of our Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine program,” said Jonathan Pheasant, faculty executive director at UNSW Medicine. “To be number one in the state in terms of unique first preferences is a testament to the quality of our staff, facilities and most importantly, the calibre of our existing cohort of students along with our graduates.”

The majority of Year 12 students have now received their university offers and, according to UAC, health, management and commerce, and society and culture are the most in-demand fields of study.

UNSW Sydney retained its position as the most popular university in NSW and ACT – receiving more first preferences from all prospective students for the second successive year.

UNSW secured a 16% share of overall first preferences, to take top spot once again. This is the first time that UNSW has been ranked number one for consecutive years.

Among school leavers, UNSW was the most popular institution of choice for more than 7800 students, marking a 4.5% growth compared with 2017.
