Dr Margaret Peden was educated in South Africa. She holds degrees in nursing, epidemiology and a PhD in injury epidemiology. She worked at Groote Schuur Hospital for 10 years before taking up a position at the South African Medical Research Council for 7 years where she was instrumental in setting up an injury surveillance system for SA and conducting research on road safety, alcohol and child injuries. In 2000 she moved to the World Health Organization (WHO) in Switzerland where she was the Coordinator of the Unintentional Injuries Prevention unit from 2000 to 2017. She was the executive editor of both the world reports on Road traffic injury prevention (2004) and Child injury prevention (2008). She also contributed to WHO’s Health for Adolescents report and the Global Accelerated Action for the Health of Adolescents (AA-HA!) guidance document. She also coordinated WHOs contribution to the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety and the first three global status reports on road safety. She is the author of multiple child/adolescent injury-related reports and articles. Dr Peden currently holds joint positions at The George Institute for Global Health (University of Oxford) – where she is Head of the Global Injury Programme as well as Co-directing the WHO Collaborating Centre on Injury Prevention and Trauma Care – and the International Injury Research Unit (Johns Hopkins University) where she is a Senior Technical Advisor. Dr Peden is also a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales.
