How to Support UNSW Medicine
There are many ways that you can help UNSW Medicine - supporting researchers, providing opportunities for students and creating partnerships that positively impact our community and people's lives.
We are always recruiting volunteers to assist with research projects, looking for placements for students to gain valuable work experience and fundraising for a variety of projects such as scholarships, infrastructure changes and research.
Learning and Teaching
The Primary Care team within the School of Public Health and Community Medicine (SPHCM) welcomes input from UNSW alumni who are presently working in general practice or other areas of community medicine. Their undergraduate program has a number of opportunities for the supervision and training of medical students in these areas, mainly being in Phase 2 of the curriculum in ‘Society and Health’, and in Phase 3 of the curriculum in ‘Primary Care’.
Click here for Phase 2 and 3 clarification.
Phase 2 students are placed in community medicine clinical attachments in areas such as diabetes clinics, drug and alcohol services, youth health clinics and many other community based services. Phase 3 students are supervised by GPs in the community in both metropolitan and rural settings.
Teaching activities for accredited placements attract federal government Practice Incentive Payment (PIP) support and the university welcomes its clinical supervisors in Primary Care to a variety of tailored education and training sessions and other events. The Primary Care team and the SPHCM also support their Primary Care teachers with opportunities to be awarded clinical academic titles from UNSW and associated privileges which include library facilities and invitations to campus based activities.
If you currently work in a community based clinical setting and would like to find out more about the Undergraduate Medicine Program or supervising students, SPHCM would be delighted to hear from you. There is a great amount of flexibility in terms of the level of activity or supervision that you might be able to offer, and your input will be highly valued. For further information please visit the
Primary Care Teacher's Support page or contact the Undergraduate Administration Officer at SPHCM via email

Research
The University of New South Wales School of Psychology and The Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute are seeking healthy volunteers to participate in studies of:
1) Hormone receptor effects on response inhibition and memory: A study of the effects of hormone receptors on response inhibition and memory using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging. We hope to learn how genes may influence response inhibition and memory
2) Perceptual category learning: A study into perceptual category learning. We hope to learn how people make judgments about membership in novel, perceptually based categories
3) Cortical contributions to probabilistic category learning: A study of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation upon learning and memory. TMS produces localised magnetic fields that stimulate small areas of the brain. We hope to learn how different areas of the brain contribute to a specific type of learning and memory
Recompense to participants
Your participation in any of these studies may have associated expenses. Reimbursement will be provided for your time and for out-of-pocket expenses, such as travel to the centre.
