2009 Commercialisation Workshop: Models and Challenges for Technology - Don’t forget to diarise
The 2009 Commercialisation Workshop will build on the knowledge transfer of the 2008 event, which spanned the basics including: an introduction to the role of NSi, the definition of intellectual property (IP), UNSW IP policy in a nutshell, the patenting process and commercialisation 101.
The 2008 Commercialisation Notes can be found at: document link (login required)

We will focus on 4 technology classes - biomarkers, therapeutics, medical devices/ software and research tools. For each of these asset types we will cover criteria for evaluating commercial value and patentability, route to market, development models and timelines, industry partnership models, and other issues and challenges that may arise from any commercialisation efforts.
The workshop will feature a panel that will be drawn from a group of business development managers, patent attorneys, industry representatives and experienced UNSW inventors.

NEW: Simple process for disclosing research outcomes to NewSouth Innovations
Acting at the request of Dean Smith and Associate Dean (Research) Wakefield, NSi has developed a simple process allowing Faculty of Medicine researchers to quickly and easily disclose novel research outcomes for commercialisation review. As outlined in the map, researchers initiate the process by informing their Research Unit Head of a manuscript in preparation. The Head of Research Unit will make a recommendation to the researcher regarding disclosure to NSi; if positive the researcher completes a simple, one page disclosure form and submits it to NSi together with the draft manuscript. A member of NSi’s Life Science Business Development team will review the submitted one page disclosure form and manuscript within two weeks. If commercial potential is observed, the researcher will be asked to complete a full Intellectual Property Notification (IPN) to initiate the commercialisation process.
Importantly, once the initial one page disclosure form and manuscript is provided to NSi, the researcher is free to submit the manuscript to a journal avoiding any delays to the publication plan. NSi’s new process facilitates researchers’ compliance with the UNSW IP Policy and the National Principles of Intellectual Property Management for Publicly Funded Research and further allows avoidance of pre-mature public disclosures that may impact IP protection. With this new disclosure process NSi reaffirms its commitment to providing superior, professional IP and commercialisation services to the Faculty of Medicine. Whether through this new process or via normal submission of a full IPN, we encourage researchers to contact NSi at any time to discuss potential IP and commercialisation opportunities.
