Commercialisation Workshop 23 April 2009 - Commercialisation of Medical Research, Part Two: Models and Challenges

This workshop is being organised by NewSouth Innovations Pty Ltd (NSi) and is intended to expand on last year’s general information workshop on “Commercialisation of Research at UNSW” and the role of NSi.

The idea of this workshop is to provide the FOM staff and researchers with specific real life examples of how to identify potentially valuable IP arising out of your research activities, the various modes of protection for this IP, and to discuss the challenges and commercialisation models/strategy around Diagnostics, Medical Devices & Software, and Therapeutics. We have invited a distinguished panel of experts from industry and academia to share their experiences in these areas and provide feedback and intelligence on how to maximise your interactions with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies with the view of establishing long-term collaborations which will allow you to better identify commercial opportunities, potentially be a source of funding and expert opinion, and ultimately improve the quality and focus of your research.

Look forward to seeing you there,

Dr Alfredo Martinez-Coll | Senior Business Development Manager, NewSouth Innovations Pty Limited

A detailed agenda is available on http://www.nsinnovations.com.au/events on the Events page.

Research Showcase Series

In 2009, the office of the DVC (Research) will be hosting a series of Research Showcases aimed primarily at identifying opportunities for collaboration across the university.

Each Showcase will provide researchers with the opportunity to present their work to colleagues from other Schools, Faculties and Research Centres.

UNSW Research Showcases are intended to provide a unique opportunity to reach out to people in the University with similar interests and build research strength by collaboration. It is an opportunity to:
  • ‘Pitch’ a new idea or line of research and seek both feedback and alternative ways of viewing the issues.
  • To find out what is happening in the field and test your understanding against the realities.
  • To build new networks and strengthen old ones.
  • Above all, it is an opportunity to be bold and try new ideas in a supportive and relaxed environment.
Upcoming Showcases:
  • Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Showcase - 18 & 19 May 2009 (Faculties - Science/Law/FBE/Engineering/Business/FASS/ADFA)
  • Welling Being - 20 August 2009 (Faculties - FASS/Medicine/COFA/Law/FBE)
  • Robotics - Date TBA (Faculties - Medicine/FBE/ADFA/Engineering)
  • Population Change - 4 December 2009 (Faculties - FBE/Law/Business/FASS/Medicine)
Prizes will be offered for the best presentation in each session and for the best poster. Each prize will be $1,000. The money will be placed in a nominated university account to further research collaboration. Students may use it for conference attendance and travel.

MCSU is moving

After many comfortable years in Ground Floor Wallace Wurth – in the lovely M wing (quiet and impossible for couriers and the uninitiated to find), we are following the Faculty Finance/HR/OHS with a move into level 2 of the AGSM building. Thank you to SOMS for sharing kitchen and hallway with the IT group, we leave you our fridge as a token of our time together. We have moved to a land of narrow dark hallways and a courtyard with coffee. We hope that the move will not impact our responsiveness to calls. It will make it slightly harder for people to just drop in.. but as we usually say.. log a call ;) That number has not changed.. 938 51333

Thefts and Backups

There have been a number of thefts of IT equipment across campus over the last few weeks. Desktops and even backup devices have been stolen from Goodsell. This is a pertinent time to remind you to back up to the faculty server. Where data exceeds the capacities we have currently allocated then please contact me. In terms of securing your PC or other devices I would suggest you talk first within your school/unit. Our advice is that backup drives and other more portable devices should be in locked cabinets/drawers and not left out on desks overnight.

IT Desktop Support Manager

Ross Beck will be taking over from Houssein Hallani as the IT Desktop Support Manager in the Medicine Computing Support Unit while Jodi Sweeney is on maternity leave. Ross has been working with MCSU for as long as we have had a desktop team and should be a familiar face.

Speaking of faces, as I said when Jodi left, a close approximation of all of our faces can be found on our website along with some other more relevant information. You can trust these faces to look after your computing requirements.

Any wonderful compliments on our excellent service should be passed on directly to the relevant team members. Any problems should however, be addressed either to Ross or myself.

Luc Betbeder
IT Manager

Library News

Two New Services

The University Library is offering two new services to support UNSW researchers.

The Grant Application Statement aims to provide you with evidence to highlight your impact in grant applications. A summary of metrics about your publishing performance will be provided, such as total citations, cites/paper, mean impact factor and other relevant metrics. Brief analysis will also be conducted to identify a few key points that distinguish your performance, such as achievement at a higher level than discipline benchmarks.

The Journal Trends Report aims to provide Schools or research groups with up-to-date information on publication outlets within their discipline. These reports will include information such as the current top journals by impact factor and ERA ranking; citation trend analysis of key journals in the discipline and new journals on the market

Please contact your Outreach Librarian for further information:

  • Richard Gray (Research Centres) -
